MATERNITY  WARD

Introduction
Maternity ward is one of the main departments in PCEA Kikuyu Hospital General Unit.
It is a set up that deals with care of mothers just before,during,and after delivery.This
Includes,physical,emotional,spiritual and psychological support.

Vision
The maternity vision is ‘’ADVOCATING FOR SAFE MOTHERHOOD’’through BBI(Better Birth Initiative)
And EBM(Evidence Based Medicine/Midwifery).

Staffing
The department currently has 14 qualified Nurses/Midwifes
-7 KRCHN
-7 KECHN
There is a residential Obstetrician/Gynaecologist,and a Medical Officer based in maternity ward.
Several M.O and C.O interns cover their rotations in this department.
There is a housekeeper who usually keeps the department clean.

Sections
The 19 bed capacity department is divided into the following sections;
-Reception
-Labour Ward
-Delivery Room
-Nursery
-Semi Private
-Ultrasound
-Postnatal Ward

Reception
This is the Nurses desk (station) whereby all people (Patients,relatives and other visitors) report.
It is situated on the  main departmental entrance.

Labour Ward (1st stage)

This area has 3 beds.
The main procedures that usually done here are;
-Patient admission-History taking and examination.
-Labour induction-done with Cytotec(Misoprostol),Vagiprost,or PGE2
-Labour augmentation-done with Syntocinon in drip.
-Labour monitoring-by use of partograph.
Mother is transferred to delivery room upon full cervical dilatation.

 Delivery room (2nd stage)

It has 2 delivery couches.
Mothers are received from labour ward when they are fully dilated.
The delivery is conducted and 3rd stage completed in this room.
Baby is transferred to nursery after Apgar scoring in one minute.
Mother is observed for one hour and then transferred to postnatal ward if no complication arises.

Nursery
It has one functional incubator,2 photoboxes and 4 babycots.
Subsequent Apgar scoring is done at 5 and 10 minutes respectively.
Weighing is also done here.
Top tailing,cord cleaning and dressing of the baby is done before handing it to the mother.
Initial examination of the baby.

Semi private

Has 2 beds.
Daily bed charges is Kshs.1,000 only.
Early booking is usually recommended.

Ultrasound room

Situated on the right side of the main entrance next to semi private room.
This room initially was the full private room.
The obstetric scans are charged Kshs.1,500 only.

Postnatal ward

It has 12 beds.
3 beds are specifically for post caeserian section mothers.This is because they are adjustable.
Some of the procedures done in P/N includes;
i)P/N exam for mothers –lochia assessments
-fundal height
-involution
-breastfeeding establishment.
ii)Health education
iii)Routine physical exam for neonates
iv)Baby care –top tailing,cord cleaning and breastfeeding techniques.
v)Immunizations –oral birth polio and BCG
vi)Notification of Birth.

Others

Johnsons&Johnsons –provide mothers with;
-baby soap                         
-baby powder  
-baby oil
-pamphlets.      
Proctar and Gamble company provides pampers for the babies

The department runs 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.
